Weddings

The Orthodox wedding, known as the Crowning, is celebrated in church in the presence of sponsors, after the couple has met with the priest and completed their civil marriage.

Special Service

The Crowning

A Crowning service at Durham Orthodox Church

What to bring

The parish provides the crowns and the wedding certificate. On the day it helps to have with you:

  • A copy of the civil marriage certificate, to register the wedding in the parish records
  • A pair of rings, to be blessed during the service
  • Candles, to be held by the sponsors
  • A bottle of sweet wine, for the common cup shared by the couple
  • Ladyfingers or biscotti, according to some traditions

If you have particular wishes for the service, the priest is glad to hear them when the date is arranged.

Requirements

At least one partner must be an Orthodox Christian in good standing, having recently made their confession and received Holy Communion. The other may be a baptised Christian of another denomination able to produce a valid certificate of baptism; the priest will advise whether they need to be received into the Orthodox Church first, which is not always required. What is always required is a commitment that the couple's children will be baptised Orthodox. The couple must already be legally married and show their marriage certificate to the priest beforehand. Marriage between a Christian and a non-Christian partner is not possible in the Orthodox Church; the priest will advise.

Preparation

Before the ceremony the couple meets with the priest for an informal conversation about the meaning and shape of the Crowning service, and about the responsibilities and challenges of married life.

The service

The Crowning takes place in an Orthodox church in the presence of two sponsors, traditionally a married Orthodox couple. Their role is liturgical, and differs from that of a best man or maid of honour. Guests are asked to dress modestly. The church may be decorated for the occasion, provided it is cleared afterwards.

Photographs and video

Considerate photographers and videographers are welcome, following the guidance the priest gives on the day. It is worth allowing time for group photographs at the end of the service; please discuss this with the priest when arranging the date.

Costs

As with baptisms, there is no set fee. Donations towards the running of the parish are very much appreciated.

Every family’s circumstances are different, and none of this need be settled before you get in touch. Dates and preparation are arranged personally with the Rector, who will guide you through everything. Contact the Rector →

“Nowadays, people long to be loved, and that is why they fail. The right way is not to be concerned with whether others love you or not, but whether you love Christ and other people. In this way, your soul will be filled.”
